Cancer – Up to Stage II

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. There are over 100 types of cancer. And any part of the body can be affected. Some types of cancer cause rapid cell growth, while others cause cells to grow and divide at a slower rate. Certain forms of cancer result in visible growths called tumors, while others, such as leukemia, do not. Genetic factors can contribute to the development of cancer. A person's genetic code tells their cells when to divide and expire. Changes in the genes can lead to faulty instructions, and cancer can result.

  • Over 2 million skin cancers are diagnosed every year – many of those could be prevented by taking necessary precautions.
  • Anyone can develop cancer, however, the risk of getting it increases with age. Most cases occur in middle-aged adults or older. About 77% of all cancers are diagnosed in people 55-years or older.
  • Childhood cancers account for 1 percent of all new cancer diagnoses. In 2013, an estimated 11,630 childhood cancer cases are expected to occur among children 14 years and younger. Although uncommon, cancer is the second leading cause of death in children.
  • The most common cancers among men are: prostate, lung, and colorectal (colon) cancer. For women it’s: breast, lung, and colorectal cancer.
